Junior Development Pathway and Programs  


An opportunity to Come & Try track cycling. This pathway program will encompass the development of Novice/Skills Training/Racing Sessions in a controlled environment. 

This skills training & racing session is provided primarily for riders new to track cycling. Adult riders are welcome to attend! 

The programs are run from October to March (traditional summer track season at Blackburn’s East Burwood Velodrome situated at East Burwood Reserve, 298 Burwood Hwy Burwood East VIC 3151. Let’s Race6 week program (Thursday evening) is aimed at juniors aged 7 to 14 who want to learn about track cycling in a fun and relaxed environment under the guidance and support of nationally qualified coaches. Juniors will laugh their way through time trials, flying 200’s and other skill type events with other like-mined juniors. Registration is at 6pm, with the session running from 6:30pm– 8.00pm (sometimes longer due to Day Light Savings). 

J-Cycle program (Thursday evening) is aimed at juniors who successfully progress from the Let’s Race program with basic skills. As part of this program new skills, along with tactics will be developed to empower each rider with the confidence and knowledge they need to know how to ride the track and progressing into racing. Registration is at 5.45pm, with the session running from 6:00pm– 8.00pm (sometimes longer due to Day Light Savings). 

Novice session, (Saturday morning) registration at 10:00am with the session running from 10:30am – 12:00pm where riders will have an opportunity to further develop their riding and racing skills to enhance their ability to successfully progress to racing in their age group categories.

Foundation session, (Monday evening at Darebin International Sports Centre) registration at 5.45pm with the session running from 6:00 – 7:00pm (beyond 7pm is via invitation of the Coach). This session is aimed at riders who have experience cycling on an outdoor velodrome but now wish to progress and further develop their skills, confidence and ability. Foundations riders attending 6pm session must book by emailing training@bbn.org.au and arrive early to organise and set up a bike. See Team App events schedule. 

For insurance reasons, it is required that all participants have an appropriate Cycling Australia licence. All Let’s Race participants receive a race licence membership as part of their program. All other licence information is available via the club website (see the Membership tab).

When does this start? 

Every Thursday & Saturday, riders and parents are to arrive at least 15 minutes before each session starts. 

What to Bring? 

The days can be cold & wet so please be prepared by bringing warm & wet weather clothing. Even in the Australian summer months it can become quite cold between efforts, therefore please take this advice seriously and bring warm clothing. Each rider needs to bring their bike (there are some club bikes available), helmet, cycling shoes (if they have them - if not they will need appropriate footwear, no thongs or sandals) to match the pedals on their bike. Please bring a sun hat, jacket, track pants, sun screen lotion, drink and a snack!
