TRAINING PATHS OF PROGRESSION

Blackburn prides itself on being an open and friendly club. We welcome all riders, whether you are young, old, female or male, novice or champion. We work to support all riders and aim to help you get what you want from cycling, be it a fun ride on the weekend or help in reaching the Olympics.

STAGE 1 - BBN PROMOTION

This is the promoton of cycling and encouraging riders to begin and learn more about cycling.

STAGE 2 - BBN SKILLS

This is the cycling skills session which is currently conducted on Thursday evening and Saturday morning before each racing session at the club track over summer and Saturday afternoons over winter at Siemens, Bayswater.

STAGE 3 - BBN FITNESS

Once a rider has gained sufficient skills they can progress to these sessions which can be either Monday club training (Darebin International Sport Centre – indoor velodrome), Wednesday (club ergo/spin session), or Tuesday/Thursday (DISC racing). It is expected that riders have begun to race either on the track or at the Summer Criteriums. Riders will be introduced to structured training. For the riders in race category Junior 13 or below this may not be applicable for them at this stage. The time commitment for this level is to participate in sessions either 2 or 3 days a week. A rider may remain at this level and become a good club rider and enjoy the sport of cycling.

STAGE 4 - BBN JETS

For those that have sufficient fitness and/or have abilities can progress to begin more intense training. The time commitment for this level is to participate in sessions 3 to 5 days a week. Riders at this level we would expect to become candidates for state team selection and Victorian Institute of Sport (VIS) and later the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS).

STAGE 5 - BBN TEAM

Each year opportunities will be provided to club riders wishing to compete and race in a club team in Victorian Road Series events.


GENERAL INFORMATION In general, participants will progress through the training levels from the Skills/Novice level to the Elite to ensure safety and appropriate standard for the training session. Progression from one level to another must be on the recommendation of the coaches. The BBN Skill (Novice/Skills sessions) and BBN Fitness (General Training sessions) are a prerequisite for new track and road riders to racing on Saturday afternoons. For insurance purposes, all participants MUST, without exception, have a Cycling Australia (ACF) licence: either a Race licence or a Ride licence. New members are welcome and coaches will be able to assist with membership registration. Non BBN club members may be invited by the coach in charge to participate in track and road training session under the guidelines of the club's Track Training Policy - however such members must have an appropriate ACF licence (either a Race licence or a Ride licence).
